Lesson Overview

Teacher Overview:

Students will read The Dot and make a video about the whole experience.

Student Summary:

The Dot is a story about encouragement and making your mark to see where it takes you. Vashti learns how to make her mark and then emulates her teacher and shows others how to make their mark. Step 1. Read The Dot Step 2. Record Vashti's dot with the gold frame and narrate why Vashti is insecure and how Vashti responds to seeing the painting in a frame with her name on it. Step 3. Record the last two pages where Vashti says, "Please...sign it." and narrate why you think this is a good ending. Step 4. Upload our dot project footage that we did as a whole grade and how this is an example of how we left our mark.

Lesson Phases

Read

Why is Vashti insecure?
Our class read the book The Dot by Peter Reynolds. This is a book about encouragement.
Description:
Read the Dot

Vashti

Write a sentence about how you think Vashti felt when all of her work was in the art show.
When Vashti saw her dot framed in gold by her teacher I bet Vashti was very surprised because she was insecure about her own art but her teacher loved her mark.
Description:
Record Vashti's dot with the gold frame and narrate why Vashti is insecure and how Vashti responds to seeing the painting in a frame with her name on it.

Sign It

Write a few sentences explaining the art work in this book and how it makes you feel.
Vashti emulates her teacher by encouraging another student to make their own mark. I thought this was an awesome ending.
Description:
Record the last two pages where Vashti says, "Please...sign it." and narrate why you think this is a good ending.

Dot Painting

How did our grade leave our mark?
Our grade invited every student to come into a class and leave their mark. Here is our dot for #DotDay
Description:
Step 4. Upload our dot project footage that we did as a whole grade and how this is an example of how we left our mark.
